The Biblio File: What Makes Vampires so Appealing? Interview with Patricia McCarthy by Nigel Beale

Patricia K. Macarthy
is author of The Crimson Series, three books, to date, about vampires.
We talk here about what makes Vampires so appealing to so many people,
about their being symbolic of manâs desire for supremacy, womenâs
desire to be consumed, about the fringe elements of society, the
attraction of eternal youth and immortality, confidence, the perfect
villian whose weapon is seduction, alpha males, power, the lack of
conscience, film, Halloween, the draw of fantasy, the defiance of death
and the preciousness of time.

During our conversation reference is made to poems by Byron and Goethe. Both example early literary treatment of Vampires [see vampires (and vampire fiction)].

The Vampire Female: "The Bride of Corinth" (1797) by: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

(1) Once a stranger youth to Corinth came,

Who in Athens lived, but hoped that he

From a certain townsman there might claim,

As his fatherâs friend, kind courtesy.

(2) Son and daughter, they

Had been wont to say

Should thereafter bride and bridegroom be.

But can he that boon so highly prized,

Save tis dearly bought, now hope to get?

Antipsychotic medications are commonly prescribed. But they are now known to increase risk of mortality and stroke, with concerns that their use is excessive in under-resourced aged care settings.Management tool or good medical practice? Light used to monitor nerves of flies
Gero Miesenböck studies the nervous system of flies by using light as a tool rather than the more cumbersome electrode. The optical signals record the activity of neurons. The neurons being studied are those which react to smell. These neurons are programmed genetically to respond to light and trigger an electrical impulse.

Squid gel assists in nasal surgery

Trends in science education
School students are turning away from hard sciences such as physics. Helen Haste discusses the trends and asks whether young students get what they look for in science courses.

New approach to undergraduate science
Phil Long says very little of interest is offered in undergraduate courses. He has broken down the typical large physics lecture with 600 people in a lecture hall, and has smaller groups doing both theory and practical experiments in the same session. He also sees application for digital technology, allowing work to remain, be classified and accessed, rather than decay on paper.

Bob Downe offers a few hints at saving energy in the office.

Double influence on changing climate
Using ice cores from Antarctica and Greenland, the sun´s activity over the past 10,000 years can be reconstructed. It shows cycle variations. Ken McCracken suggests there are two contributors to climate change - increased carbon dioxide and methane due to human activity and a changing sun cycle. He says we´re entering a cooling period from the sun, as sun spots decrease in frequency, but we shouldn´t diminish our concern or efforts in reducing production of greenhouse gas.

Living Planet: Environment Matters Around the Globe

IUCN releases their Red List of Endangered Species – Sailing to Barcelona harbor for environmental awareness – Eyewitness accounts about climate change – these stories and more in this edition of Living Planet.

Tune in via the live-stream or download the programme as a podcast. Send your comments and questions to features@dw-world.de.
IUCN Publishes Red List of Endangered Species

The IUCN is perhaps best known for its Red List of Endangered Species, which is a kind of health check for the planet. Currently the planet is not in good shape.

This time of year, people from all over the Europe often head to Spain to get their last dose of fun in the sun before the long, cold winter sets in. But this week Barcelona is drawing crowds looking to do more than just get a tan on the beach. The Spanish port city is the place to be for anybody interested in ecological issues.

The IUCN or International Union for the Conservation of Nature, is the world’s biggest and oldest global environmental network. It only holds its general congress every four years. And this time, it’s come to Barcelona. Our Living Planet team is there to report back on the latest news.

Report: Irene Quaile

Voices of IUCN

Thousands of people have descended on Barcelona, Spain for the ecological conference.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature, or IUCN, holds its general congress every four years. This year it’s taking place in the Spanish port city of Barcelona, and has drawn visitors from around the world. Living Planet talked with a few of them to find where they’re from and what brought them to the conference.

Vox Pops: Irene Quaile / Nina Haase

Sailing to Barcelona

A group of environmentalists are hoisting their sails and floating into the Barcelona harbor to draw attention to the threat faced by the animals and plants living in the world’s oceans.

Some of the participants at the World Conservation Congress took a route that many would consider rather unusual. "Sailing to Barcelona" is an initiative that brought a colorful flotilla of several dozen boats from around the world sailing into the picturesque harbor this weekend.

Their mission: to join the IUCN conference and pass on the message that we can and must protect our seas, oceans and coasts. The boats are not just ordinary sailing vessels. Each is living proof that something can be done to protect the extraordinary environment that covers more than two thirds of the earth. The Living Planet team jumped aboard the French ship Garlaban, as it left the old harbor of Barcelona to join in the parade of boats.

Report: Nina Haase

Climate Witness Series: Tanzania

In Living Planet’s new ‘Climate Witness’ mini-series we hear first-hand testimony about the consequences of climate change.

This week we take a look at Tanzania. The eastern African nation is extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The frequency of droughts and flooding is on the rise, which impacts water resources, food and agriculture and can possibly lead to famine. In part four of ‘Climate Witness’, Grace Mketto, from the Institut Africain pour le Développement Economique et Social (INADES) speaks about her country’s struggle.

Report Andrew Zubiri / Irene Quaile

Meghan O'Rourke, Katie Roiphe, and Troy Patterson discuss New York Times columnist David Carr's The Night of the Gun, a memoir in which he uses his journalistic skills to dig up the details he's forgotten about his earlier life as a drug addict.
